Human Performance Enhancement, Inc. (HPE) was founded in April, 1986. It is a commercial spinoff of a basic research program on human learning, specifically the study of the ability of people to assess their own knowledge. The major financial sponsor of the research program was the U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences. The Swedish Institute, New Mexico State University and Stockholm University have also supported the theoretical development.
The research findings that led to establishing HPE at that time were:
Some tasks may be learned 25% faster if the trainee is required to assess the correctness of each answer
The speed and confidence of actions is importantly related to these self assessments
Trainees may study more in preparation for self assessment testing and training situations
Self assessment facilitates the detection of misinformation (sure-but-wrong answers). Early detection of misinformation allows human errors in performance in the workplace and elsewhere to be reduced or prevented
Since then a number of other benefits of self assessment have emerged from research and from recognizing application potentials. HPE is dedicated to the application of these findings, and to assisting instructors in the application of SACAT to enhance learning.
